Soraya Sharghi, born in 1988 in Iran, is an Iranian artist currently based in New York City. Sharghi works with various media, including painting and sculpture, with the goal of creating new myths and narratives using ancient mythology, particularly Persian mythology, that focus on power. She doesn’t aim to imitate the scenes of these tales, but rather reimagines them to fit her purpose and creates extraordinary or supernatural beings. Sharghi draws connections between history, myth, and her personal imaginary world to craft new stories with her characters while aiming to establish a universal language that sparks discussions across different social and political contexts. Sharghi received a BFA in painting from Soore Art University in Tehran and an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in California.
